Redesigning Dell’s Search and Results experience
Enhancing global search for faster, smarter, and more intuitive information discovery across Dell’s enterprise platforms.
Overview
I redesigned the global search experience across Dell enterprise products to meet user expectations for speed, relevance, and usability. Through competitive benchmarking, primary user research, and deep analysis of existing search patterns, I identified core usability issues and delivered an improved experience.
Working across design, research, and engineering teams, I iterated on interface concepts including filter logic, result states, and personalized search behavior. I worked with my research partners to conduct user testing. The final design featured advanced capabilities like faceted search, contextual filters, result prediction, and intelligent fallback states.
Problem statement
How can we create a standardized, accessible, and enhanced search experience for users?
1. Search Variations
Delivered use case oriented variations of the search dropdown based on usability insights. These variations were designed to improve clarity and flexibility throughout the search journey.
2. Contextual Filters
To streamline the search experience, I designed a filter system allowing users to narrow results before typing. Positioned ahead of the search input, the dropdown provides clear category choices derived from the console’s underlying information architecture. This removes guesswork and reduces friction, enabling users to focus on relevant results without unnecessary filtering or browsing.
3. Smart Results
Search results are dynamically generated based on intelligent prediction and personalized usage data. The results are grouped on a dedicated Top Results page, making it easy to identify and scan across various record types. This structure improves scannability, relevance, and helps users find the right information faster.
Reflection
This project sharpened my ability to design for clarity at scale. It taught me how thoughtful UX in search can streamline complexity, enhance user trust, and the importance of setting clear metrics to evaluate the impact of system tools.
